Scientific Activity Summary

ALEPH collaboration

1984-1993:

I have studied the measurement of z coordinate and dE/dx measurement with the ALEPH Time Projection Chamber (TPC), I have collaborated to the project of the ALEPH TPC readout Fastbus module (TPP) and have collaborated to and later managed the ALEPH TPC data acquisition at the level of the TPP.

1994-1996:

I have been the principal author of the ALEPH tau lifetime measurement with the sum of the impact parameters method.

NAxx

1986-1988:

I was the simulation manager for NAxx, a proposed experiment to study b production on fixed-target with an associative memory trigger. I have done my PHD thesis on this proposal, which was not eventually funded.

BABAR (SLAC)

1995-now:

I have managed the BABAR Silicon Vertec Tracker (SVT) data acquisition in the teast beams preceeding data-taking, in the preparation and at the beginning of the data taking.
I have been the principal author of the BABAR tau lifetime analysis (a preliminary result was presented in 2004).
I have co-lead the Tau Physics BABAR analyses since 2005, and the BABAR Light New Physics analyses since 2010. The results include Tau Lepton Flavour Violation searches, precision measurements of Tau branching fractions and spectral functions, searches for CP violation in tau production and decay, searches for rare suppressed tau decays, searches for light New Physics particles.

Silicon Detectors R&D

I have been involved since 1991 in several grants on Silicon Detectors R&D. In 2008-2009 I have managed the DAQ for SLIM5 and VIPIX, in 2011-2012 I have managed the reconstruction and data analysis for SLIM5 and VIPIX. The SLIM5 collaboration has been aimed at developing CMOS MAPS with an unique design approach to improve the readout speed and at the same time to increase the sensitive element area, esploiting the triple well option of CMOS commercial processes for the collecting electrode. SLIM5 project included a full signal processing chain at the pixel level, with a sparsified readout architecture. The VIPIX collaboration has done research and development on a vertically integrated Silicon detector for future high luminosity detectors, composed by a high resistivity sensor layer interconnected to a CMOS readout integrated circuit.

SuperB project

2005-2013:

I have coordinated in several roles and collaborated to investigations and reports production on the Tau Physics reach of the SuperB project, in the two main areas of Lepton Flavour Violation searches and precision probing of the tau EDM, anomalous magnetic moment and possible CP violating production and decay. I co-authored several Physics and Detector reports including the Conceptual Design Report and the Technical Design Report.

LHCb (CERN)

2014-now:

I have reviewed LHCb analyses and publication before submission and collaborated to data-taking performing shifts.

FNAL muon g-2 experiment (E989)

2016-now:

I am the "result combination" convener, responsible for the combination of the different analyses of the muon precession frequency, the combination of the measurements the muon precession, magnetic field, all corrections, and the required external inputs to assemble the muon magnetic anomaly measurement. I am the computing coordinator for the Italian group in the collaboration. I worked on the laser calibration system for the calorimeter gain by participating to test beams, by writing and maintaining online and hardware-related software, by collaborating to the commissioning of the apparatus in 2017 and 2018, and by doing shifts for data taking since 2018.

Heavy Flavour Averaging Group

2009-now:

Since 2009 I am member of the HFLAV-Tau sub-group. Since 2011 I am the convener. The HFLAV-Tau sub-group produces the Tau lepton world averages and their elaboration to test the Standard Model lepton universality and to determine the CKM coefficient |Vus| from the tau lepton measurements. Since 2016, it provides the tau lepton branching fractions fit for the Particle Data Group "Review of Particle Physics".

Particle Data Group

2016-now:

Since 2016 I am co-author of the review on Tau Branching Fractions, encoder for the tau lepton measurements, collaborator in charge of doing the Tau Branching Fraction Fit for the Review of Particle Physics. The published fit is a version of the HFLAV-Tau fit.

Tau Physics

1990-now:

I have worked on several aspects of Tau Physics, from precision measurements, to searches for Lepton Flavour Violation in tau decay, to evalutation of tau Physics reach with the SuperB project. I have organized the 2006 edition of the bi-yearly International Tau Workshop, in Pisa. Since several years, I am member of the International Advisory Committees of two conferences where Tau Physics topics are presented, the Tau and the PhiPsi bi-yearly International Workshops. In 2016 I have been designated as the summary talk speaker at the 2016 International Tau Workshop in Beijing. In 2016, I have been awarded funds by Scuola Normale, with a competitive procedure, to do research on Tau spectral functions. In May 2018, I have been appointed as member of the international advisory committee of the BINP (Novosibirsk) Super c-tau Factory. In December 2018 I have served as chair of the International Advisory Committee for the evaluation of the Super Charm-Tau Factories projects SCT (Russia) e SCTF/Hiepa (Cina). In 2019 I have presented the Tau Physics prospects and I have been the author of the Tau Physics section of the "Physics Briefing Book" for the 2020 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics. In 2020 I have presented the Tau Physics case at the 3rd FCC Physics and Experiments Workshop.
